On a daily basis, a certain sound can take you to many places and shift your emotions, energy, and vibration. While the sound of the ocean may bring you back to a happy childhood memory and boosts your mood, the sound of the rain might bring you back to an unfortunate one and give you the chills. For centuries, both music and sound have been used as a tool to calm and heal the mind, body and soul. People have used their voices and musical instruments to pray and to chant. Mosques, temples and pyramids were built to strengthen sound. In other words, sound has always been used to heal in one way or another.

Today, we refer to sound therapy as a therapeutic and healing method that deconstructs music into pure sound, with the understanding that sound can have a powerful influence on our emotions and energy. Every energy in the universe vibrates in different frequencies. Sound therapy can be considered to be energy work since it helps regulate a more balanced and harmonious frequency within the mind, body and soul realm. Sound therapy can help to reduce stress, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, promote relaxation, and improve sleep. In certain cultures, it is believed to help balance your bodyโ€™s energy centers, also known as chakras.

A sound healing therapy session is called a sound bath and its main objective is to help facilitate brainwave shifts and rebalance the mind, body and soul. Like a mantra during meditation, the sound helps create a pathway to stillness and calm. By using a rhythm and frequency, we can attune our brainwaves which makes it possible to down-shift our typical beta state (i.e. waking consciousness) to alpha (i.e. relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (i.e. meditative state) and delta (i.e. sleeping state). Sound healers use voices, bells, chimes, Himalayan singing bowls, tuning forks and gongs in order to facilitate various sounds, musical vibrations, and frequencies. Like in all meditative and holistic practices, each individualโ€™s journey and experience is different. The magic of sound can cause some to feel very relaxed and peaceful during and after the therapy, while others may go through emotional, transformative breakthroughs.
