Lymphatic Drainage

Sporty & Rich Wellness - Lymphatic Drainage

By: @thatnextlevelgirl

The lymphatic system is a system of organs that is part of our immune system. It rids our bodies of toxins or unwanted waste materials and transports a fluid called lymph around the body which helps to fight infections.

Practices that promote lymphatic drainage can be extremely beneficial to your health as they help to increase circulation, detoxification, immune function and support body fluid balance. See below for a list of practices.

Lymphatic drainage massages, or “detox massages”, are a gentle massage that help to promote the movement of lymph fluid around the body. Detox massages support your body's internal filtration system which in turn, helps to support your immune system. The masseuse massages in a direction that follows the natural flow of lymphatic fluid to help push toxins and excess waste to centres of the body where excretion is carried out. This improves overall circulation and can even help to reduce cellulite or uneven skin tones.

Dry Brushing is another effective method for promoting lymphatic drainage. Along with supporting the movement of lymphatic fluid around the body, it can improve the skin’s appearance. Dry brushing should always be done in a manner where you are brushing from the feet upwards, and in towards your heart. A light to medium pressure should be used, and it’s recommended to do it a few times a week for best results.

Gua sha is another great practice to support the lymphatic system. Gua Sha is a practice which focuses mostly on the face, which is where 30% of lymph nodes are concentrated. It can also help to increase the production of collagen and in turn, give you a brighter appearance while it moves any dead cells, stagnant lymph fluid, or puffiness away from the face.

Lastly, exercise is another extremely effective way to support the lymphatic system. Exercising on a trampoline, running, cardio, HIIT workouts and high intensity activity with movement are some of the most effective ways to promote the flow of lymph fluid around the body.
