My Healthy Hair Care Routine

By: Emily Oberg

Good hair is important for a lot of us but unfortunately, things like aging, stress, being in the sun, and damaging it with extreme heat and chemicals can make your hair seem like it may never go back to it’s natural, thick and luscious state.

Luckily, our hair grows out at ½ an inch each month and each time, we get a new chance to care for it as best we can and undo some of the damage that’s been done over the years.

This is my hair care routine and some of the products I use, most of which are clean and free of harsh chemicals, sulfates and parabens.

First off, like everything else that has to do with our body, good hair starts from within. A good diet that’s rich in healthy fats from things like avocados, fish, eggs and olive oil is key to having healthy, shiny, strong locks. A good variety of fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C are also helpful as they increase collagen production. And of course, PLENTY of water.

I like to give myself a scalp massage every other day. Studies have shown that this can prevent and reduce hair loss as it stimulates the hair follicle and increases blood flow, both of which help to promote hair growth.

I find that the less you do to your hair, the better. If you can live without blow drying, curling, straightening or dying it, then do it. Nothing breaks and kills your strands like extreme heat and chemicals.

Don’t over wash it. I wash my hair every 3-4 days, anymore than that will dry it out depending on where you live. My favorite shampoo and conditioner is by PURA D'OR. It’s made with things like Biotin, He Shou Wu, Red Korean Seaweed, Saw Palmetto, Nettle Extract and a long list of other ingredients meant to help promote hair growth and prevent thinning/loss.

My absolute favorite hair products are the hair oil and leave in treatment by Davines. They make my hair super soft and smell insanely good.

I like to do a hair mask once a month. My favorite is pure coconut oil. I’ll wash my hair, cover it with coconut oil, let it sit overnight and wash it out in the morning. Another good mask is John Masters’ Hair Repair Mask. I’ll use this once a week in the winter time when my hair is especially dry.

Some of my other favorite hair products:

Kaia Naturals Detox Overnight Dry Shampoo

John Masters Scalp Treatment Spray

Raincry Detangle Brush

Buly Wide Tooth Comb

Aveda Scalp Benefits Shampoo

Aveda Damage Remedy Conditioner
